There can be some uneasiness whenever an athlete goes to the next level.
Van-Far senior McKenna Engh-Hoffman will be continuing her track and field career in a place with some familiarity. Earlier in March, Engh-Hoffman had a signing ceremony at Van-Far High School to share with the public her intention of attending Columbia College.
Head coach Kris Cross said Engh-Hoffman should not just be comfortable because Columbia College is a smaller NAIA school that isn’t too far away from Vandalia but also due to Van-Far alum Ryan Bontz. Bontz, who was at the ceremony, coaches sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers as part of head coach Brennan Cape’s staff. Engh-Hoffman expects to compete in hurdles and long jump and possibly javelin.
“I think Columbia will be a good fit for Kenna in that it is a smaller college like high school was for her,” Cross said. “Hopefully, she will not get lost in a bigger program and will find good success in being at a smaller school. Their coach is also a Van-Far alumni so will have some things in common with her.”
