Virgil “Boogie” Erwin

Virgil “Boogie” Erwin, 84, of Mexico, formerly of Martinsburg and Auxvasse, passed away Monday, November 27, 2023, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico where he had resided since July of 2019.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday December 2, at Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville. Visitation will be Saturday from 1 p.m. to service time.

Boogie was born June 30, 1939, in Shamrock. He was the son of Marlin and Florence Marie (Brown) Erwin. He was raised in Martinsburg and graduated from Community R6 in 1957. He later moved to Auxvasse where he lived for 20 plus years. He had previously been married to Cathy Mills who continued to visit him at the Missouri Veterans Home.

Boogie was a veteran having served in the US Army. He worked at A.P. Green Refractories for 39 years. He enjoyed bowling, playing baseball and softball as a pitcher, and fishing. He was a diehard fan of Mizzou Sports and Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball. He loved dog and horse races and frequently traveled to Memphis, Iowa, and Kansas City to attend races. He was a former member of the Elks and Moose Lodges in Mexico.

Survivors include one brother, Glen (Carolyn) Erwin, of Mexico; one sister, Frances Jane Orrill, of Mount Pleasant, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Erwin, of Martinsburg, and Janet Erwin, of Fulton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wayne Ellsworth “Sport” Erwin, George Leroy Erwin, and Edwin Curtis Erwin; and two sisters, Carol Lou “Babe” Wieschhaus, and Elberta “Bert” McGrew.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Missouri Veterans Home Staff Activities Fund. They may be sent in care of Myers Funeral Home, 203 E. Bates Street, Wellsville, Mo. 63384.
