Oasis Tutoring, an intergenerational reading mentor program in Audrain and Callaway counties, is partnering with three community organizations serving elementary-aged children to provide summer reading coaching.
Oasis Tutoring uses a six-step approach designed by educators that emphasizes improved reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Reading buddy volunteers can change a life by providing the needed attention that helps children build confidence and experience success.
“I met my student last week,” said an OASIS tutor. “We bonded right away. We did get a story read; we discussed the story. She made shapes with the dough. She gave me a lesson in cooking her favorite foods, scrambled eggs with cheese and confetti pancakes.”
Volunteers are asked to commit to 30 minutes, once a week, for the duration of the summer program. Dates for each program are below. Training, books, and literacy activity materials are provided. Here are participating programs: Mexico Area Family YMCA summer day camp, June 27-Aug. 12; YMCA of Callaway County (Fulton) summer day camp, May 31-Aug. 12.
“The Oasis program is a worthwhile, valuable way for seniors to give back to the community and make a difference for children, said an Oasis tutor.
Those interested in volunteering should contact Mandy Plybon, Oasis tutoring coordinator, for more information.
