The Mexico Area Family YMCA, 1127 Adams Street, will host a Missouri Youth and Government (YAG) meeting 5:30 p.m. Thursday at its Y Café.
The meeting is for parents of 8th-12th graders in and around Mexico and is free to attend.
One does not have to be a YMCA member to participate.
“This is not a school sponsored event however, students will be excused if they choose to participate in the YAG conference,” Brooke Jameson, CEO/executive director of the YMCA, said.
YAG Advisors include Educators- Leslie Nichols and Sarah Gleeson and Jameson.
“The parent information meeting is an opportunity for students and their guardians to come learn about the program, how it works, meet the advisors, learn what the expectations are and to ask questions,” Jameson said.
Registration packets can be picked up at the YMCA or downloaded from its website.
The Missouri YAG program is operated by the Missouri State Alliance of YMCAs. Students interested in participating in YAG must register through the Mexico Area Family YMCA.
Traditionally, around 50 students participate each year from the Mexico community.
Missouri YAG has provided students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and experience democracy, according to information provided by Jameson. YAG is a student-driven simulation of state government, which involves 1,100 Missouri youth in grades 8-12.
Beginning in the fall of each year, students come together to choose their roles, register and prepare for the state conference held November 10-12 in Jefferson City.
At the state conference, students create their version of state government under the guidelines of the Missouri Constitution. All participants in Missouri come together for this three-day event at the State Capitol.
Legislators meet in committees and in the House and Senate chambers to debate legislation. Attorneys try their cases before student judges and engage in a trial competition.
The entire event is covered by student media. Participants also engage in campaigns and elections for officers who will serve during the following year.
