Mexico too strong for Van-Far

The Bulldogs left no doubt from the start they would take advantage of Van-Far’s struggles.

Nothing went right for the Eagles. Shots clanged off the rim or were blocked by the taller Mexico defenders. Turnovers became fast break opportunities for the home side.

By the time Van-Far’s Preston Burnett converted one of two from the line midway through the second quarter, six Bulldogs were on the board and Mexico had run up a telescopic 30-1 lead on their way to a 77-23 drubbing in the final game of Saturday’s Gary Filbert Classic at the MHS Sports Complex.

Two big plays by Welch, big win for Trojans

Five minutes defined a classic.

The brief span of time came during the Gary Filbert Classic at Mexico High School’s Sports Complex on Saturday. And the contestants had slowly been building to the frantic finish since the tip.

That the Trojans edged Harrisburg 40-35 at the buzzer when the game hung in the balance moments earlier had to do with a steal, a miss and a big play.

Bulldogs can’t overcome second quarter woes

For Mexico, Saturday’s matchup with South Boone County at the Gary Filbert Classic came down to a frustrating word: if.

“If our shots fell it would have been tight,” observed Jordyn Thurman. “But ours weren’t falling and theirs were.”

The rims were unkind to Mexico Saturday evening at the Gary Filbert Classic in the MHS Sports Complex. visitors’ 13 points in the first quarter.

Mexico girls bulldoze Hannibal

After battering Hannibal for three quarters on Thursday, the Bulldogs could rein in their offense. But the girls – particularly Elizabeth Joiner – would not let up on defense.

Joiner’s skirmish with the Pirates’ Gracie Martin and anyone else who dared to invade that precious sliver of space under the rim was more than a fourth quarter sideshow.

“I feel like everyone was watching,” Joiner said. “I was not going to let this post player get the ball.”

Mexico allowed a single basket in the final eight minutes to keelhaul the Pirates 51-15 in Hannibal.

Outside shooting dooms Community

In the aftermath of Community’s 59-29 loss to Harrisburg, Trojans junior forward Kaden Brooks admitted breaking down a team of that caliber is difficult.

“We don’t play teams like that,” he said.

North Callaway girls clobber Louisiana; boys dominate Paris

There was little drama in last Thursday’s conference match-up between the North Callaway Thunderbirds and the Louisiana Bulldogs, as the Callaway girls successfully defended their home court, soaring to a 59-8 Senior Night victory. Callaway opened up with an 18-0 lead after the first quarter and they held Louisiana to only three first-half points.
 

Community star to play for NCMC

Emma Angel played all four years on Community R6’s softball squad. She was the team’s go-to pitcher for the last three. She led the team in hitting her junior and senior seasons. And now she will be suiting up for the North Central Missouri College Pirates.

In a ceremony attended by family, coaches and several dozen of her classmates, Angel signed a letter of intent to play softball at the next level on Wednesday at the Community R-6 gym.

“I was really excited – and nervous at the same time,” she said afterward.

Bowen earns gold as girls wrestling season opens

Katie Bowen made Mexico High School history on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs freshman took first place at the Blair Oaks Girls Tournament in Jefferson City in the 107 weight class to become the first ever MHS girls varsity wrestler to medal for the new program.

North Callaway outpaces Van-Far

It’s good to be home.

That was evidenced as the North Callaway Thunderbirds hosted Van-Far Tuesday night. It was Callaway’s first home game and the T-Birds didn’t disappoint their fans with an impressive 80-50 win, despite big numbers from the Indians’ Nikos Connaway.

“It was nice to get back on the winning track,” said coach Matt Miller.

With COVID-19 always in the shadows, Callaway opted to celebrate Senior Night, which is normally the last home game of the season.

“All four of our seniors played a great game,” Miller said.

Mexico goes three for five in Carrollton

The Trojan Duels in Carrollton is a frenetic event – five teams pitted against each other in rotation, and it is a strong field.

Mexico emerged from the fray 3-2 as a team, dropping a tight 41-36 match to the hosts and struggling against Chillicothe but taking the upper hand over Hallsville, Penney and North Kansas City.
